The Mercury Bay Rugby & Sports Club, proudly wearing its signature black and yellow colors, is one of the oldest and most geographically unique rugby clubs in New Zealand. Based at Lyon Park in the picturesque beach town of Whitianga on the Coromandel Peninsula, rugby here isn’t just a sport—as locals say, “it’s a religion.”
Deep Historical Roots (1888)
The club’s history stretches all the way back to 1888, making it a true pioneer of grassroots rugby in the region. Operating in an isolated coastal community during its early decades meant that keeping the game alive required immense dedication.
The club famously celebrated its 125th Anniversary in 2013, publishing a commemorative history that fondly recalled the days when the team had to travel long distances out of the peninsula with only 13 players, relying on the team bus driver or hitchhikers to fill the remaining positions so they wouldn’t have to default.
Domestic Competition and Success
Mercury Bay competes under the umbrella of the Thames Valley Rugby Football Union. Over the years, the club has frequently punched above its weight in both the senior development and premier divisions.
A notable era of modern success came in 2005, when the Senior A squad took out the local First Division competition, capturing both the Coastal Challenge Shield and the Peninsula Challenge Cup, while the Senior B “Killer B’s” finished as championship runners-up.
The Heart of the Community: Lyon Park
The club operates out of Lyon Park on Albert Street in Whitianga. Unlike many standard club structures in New Zealand where secondary school sports are run entirely by the schools, Mercury Bay Rugby & Sports Club directly supports, funds, and administers the Mercury Bay Area School (MBAS) rugby teams.
This symbiotic relationship ensures a robust pathway for local kids—from Rippa rugby to the 1st XV—to transition directly into senior club rugby. A historic milestone for this partnership occurred in 2010, when the MBAS 1st XV won the prestigious Coulter Cup for the first time in the trophy’s 72-year history.
Modern Day Hub
The modern club is a bustling multi-sport hub. Weekends at Lyon Park are fully packed, fielding Junior Rugby, the MBAS school teams, Senior Development, and Premier Men’s teams on Saturdays, followed by a thriving Women’s Premier team taking the field on Sundays. The wider sports club also accommodates local netball and squash divisions.
