The Melville Rugby Club, based on Collins Road in Hamilton, New Zealand, has been a proud fixture of the Waikato club rugby scene for over six decades.
Foundational Years
The club was established in 1959 to serve the growing Melville community in southern Hamilton. Donning its signature red and green colors, the club quickly built a reputation as a gritty, passionate community hub. It celebrated its 50th “Golden Jubilee” in 2009.
Club Honors and Successes
Melville established itself as a force in the highly competitive Waikato Premier club rugby competition. Their greatest achievements in the men’s division center around winning the Haswell Catley Trophy (the Waikato Premier A championship) three times:
• 1979
• 1981
• 2016
The club also established a highly successful Women’s Premier program. Since joining the premier competition, the Melville women’s team has been incredibly dominant, capturing four championship titles over an eight-season span.
Beyond rugby, the modern incarnation of the club operates as a multi-sport hub, hosting thriving netball and cricket teams.
Notable Representatives
While deeply rooted in grassroots club culture, Melville has produced elite rugby talent that went on to achieve national honors:
• Arthur Stone: An All Black midfielder/wing who represented New Zealand in the mid-1980s and played extensively for Waikato.
• Miah Melsom & Norm Morrow: Both achieved national recognition as Māori All Blacks.
Recent Developments (2026)
Like many grassroots sports clubs tackling modern demographic shifts and changing player commitments, Melville hit a difficult patch in early 2026. Due to a declining senior player pool, the club made the tough but strategic decision to temporarily withdraw its Premier A team from the Waikato senior men’s competition for the 2026 season.
However, the club is far from down and out. Melville continues to field its Premier B, Colts, and “Mustangs” (Presidents) teams, while their Premier Women’s side joined forces with Hautapu to field a combined “Mel-Tap” team. The club retains its pathway to return to top-flight Waikato Premier A rugby by 2027.
