Club History

The Māori Wanderers Rugby Club is a unique, historic expatriate club with a fascinating footprint in international rugby.

While many people confuse them with the official Māori All Blacks (formerly New Zealand Māori) or domestic clubs named “Wanderers,” the Māori Wanderers established their own distinct legacy in the Northern Hemisphere.

1. Foundation in London (Early 1980s)

The club was established in the early 1980s in London, United Kingdom. It was formed primarily as a vehicle for Māori and New Zealand expatriates living, working, or playing rugby in the UK and Europe.

The club’s explicit philosophy was to play traditional “Māori champagne rugby”—a style defined by a fast, open, fluid, and highly intuitive approach to the game, very much in the spirit of the famous Barbarians FC.

2. Cultural Ambassadors and “The Barbarian Style”

The Māori Wanderers functioned as both a competitive touring side and cultural ambassadors. For young Kiwi players overseas, the club offered a way to connect with their roots, practice tikanga (cultural customs), and showcase Māori culture to European audiences through the haka and post-match waiata (songs).

They frequently assembled invitations squads consisting of high-caliber New Zealand expats, provincial players, and guest players to take on local UK clubs, regional selections, and university sides.

3. The 1990 Decade Reunion

The height of the club’s prominence in its original era culminated around its ten-year mark. In March 1990, a massive reunion event was held back home in New Zealand.

A match was organized between a Māori Wanderers Reunion XV and a New Zealand Invitation XV, played at the Waitemata Rugby Football Club in Auckland. The event brought together players who had worn the jersey over the course of the 1980s and solidified the club’s place in the folklore of expatriate rugby history.
