Club History

Manly Rugby Club

The Manly Rugby Club, affectionately known as the “Marlins,” has a long and storied history deeply rooted in the Northern Beaches of Sydney, Australia.

Early Beginnings (1883 – 1906):

1883: While the official club formation in the Sydney first-grade competition came later, records show rugby was played in Manly as early as 1883 by the Manly Beach Football Club. Their home ground was Ivanhoe Park, which later became Manly Oval (or “The Village Green”).

1884: “Beach” was dropped from the name, and the club became simply the Manly Football Club.

1892: Two other local rugby clubs emerged: the Manly Waratahs and the Manly Federals Football Club.

Joining the Premiership and Early Success (1906 – 1950s):

1906: The Federals and Manly clubs informally merged to become the Manly District Rugby Union Football Club (Manly DRUFC) and were admitted into the Sydney 1st Grade competition on April 21, 1906. Frank Row was elected as the first Chairman of Selectors for the new district club.

Early Colours: The team initially wore a white jersey with red cuffs and collar.

First Premiership (1922): Manly secured their first 1st Grade premiership in 1922 after a 6-all draw in the Grand Final with Balmain.

Manly Blues (1923): The club adopted a royal blue jersey in 1923 and became known as the Manly Blues. The red and blue colours, still prevalent today, came into being in the late 1900s

Dominance in the 1920s-1950s: Manly was a strong force during these decades, winning further premierships in:

1932, 1942, 1943, 1950 (a standout year where they won both the first grade and reserve grade titles)

Challenges and Renaissance (1950s – Present):

Tough Period: Following the 1950 success, Manly experienced a long premiership drought, with over 30 years without a 1st Grade title. This dry spell was broken in 1983 under the coaching of Alan Jones, when Manly secured another premiership.

The Marlins Era (1997 – Present): In 1997, Manly RUFC adopted the name “Marlins,” which has become their well-known brand. This same year, they won their most recent 1st Grade premiership.

Shute Shield Presence: The Manly Marlins continue to be a prominent club in the Shute Shield, the premier club rugby competition in Sydney. They have won a total of 7 Shute Shield 1st Grade premierships.

Manly Oval: Manly Oval remains the Marlins’ spiritual home ground.

Women’s Rugby: The club has a strong women’s program, the “Mermaids,” which was resurrected in 2024 and has quickly achieved success, demonstrating the club’s commitment to all facets of rugby.
