The Maheno Rugby Club is a proud, traditional country club located in the small rural settlement of Maheno, approximately 15 minutes south of Oamaru. Competing under the North Otago Rugby Football Union, the club is a deeply valued focal point for the local farming community.
Foundations and Milestone Jubilees
• Established (1896/1898): The club was established in the late 1890s (official records note its formation between 1896 and 1898) to provide a sporting and social outlet for young men in the thriving pastoral and grain-farming district.
• Preserving a Century: To celebrate a hundred years of grassroots heritage, the club marked its Centennial Jubilee (1896–1996) by publishing a 116-page historical chronicle compiled by Jenny Marshall, detailing generations of local families who have donned the jersey.
Home Ground: Maheno Domain
The club’s home base is the Maheno Domain (located off Kakanui Valley Road). The facilities perfectly embody country rugby ingenuity:
• The Fields: The club maintains three fields. While the premier Number 1 field is kept to a high standard for match days, the two outer fields are historically leased out for dairy farming and hay production during the off-season to support the club financially.
• A Night Rugby Pioneer: In the late 2010s, the club successfully completed a massive community fundraising effort to install premier floodlights at Maheno Domain. This made the domain the only ground in North Otago equipped to host club rugby matches under lights, creating a festival-like atmosphere that draws massive crowds from all over the province for night games.
Competition and the Citizens Shield
Maheno competes at the premier level of North Otago rugby, fighting annually for the coveted Citizens Shield—the ultimate prize in the North Otago club competition.
• The club shares fierce local rivalries with country neighbors like Kurow, as well as town clubs from Oamaru like Excelsior and Old Boys.
• Maheno has experienced the classic, resilient rollercoaster of grassroots sport. For instance, after finishing at the bottom of the ladder with the “wooden spoon” in 2015, the team spectacularly bounced back the very next season to capture the Citizens Shield championship in 2016.
The Modern Sports Fabric
Today, the club officially functions in tandem with local netball (the Maheno Netball Club, which has its own proud history dating back to 1947). By pooling resources and utilizing the concrete-block pavilion at the Domain, Maheno continues to defy rural depopulation trends, standing strong as a vibrant, multi-sport social anchor for families in the North Otago district.
