The Levin Wanderers Rugby Club (Levin Wanderers Rugby Football and Sports Club) is a foundational pillar of the Horowhenua-Kāpiti rugby district. Based in the town of Levin, it carries a deep history stretching back to the late 19th century.
Foundations and the Amalgamation (1898)
The club traces its official roots back to 1898. Its identity was forged through the merger of two very early pioneer sides in the fledgling settlement:
• Levin Rugby Club (founded in 1898)
• Wanderers Rugby Club (founded in 1899)
Following the amalgamation, the unified club initially wore a combined red, white, and blue jersey. However, in 1911, the club made a permanent shift to what would become their signature look — a classic, stark All Black jersey.
The Decades of Dominance
Levin Wanderers quickly grew into a powerhouse of the Horowhenua Rugby Union (which formed in 1893).
• The Post-WWI Golden Era: The club hit its absolute peak of local on-field dominance in the decade following World War I. Backed by tough, local farming and working-class rosters, Levin Wanderers captured seven championship titles during this golden stretch.
Legendary Player Connection: Harry Jacob
The history of Levin Wanderers is inextricably linked with one of the most remarkable figures in early New Zealand rugby history—Hohepa “Harry” Jacob.
• Jacob debuted for the Horowhenua provincial side in 1911 as an incredible 16-year-old talent while playing his club rugby for Wanderers.
• He served as a lieutenant in the Māori Pioneer Battalion during World War I and returned to lead Levin Wanderers and captain the New Zealand Māori team on their 1922 tour of Australia.
• Most famously, Jacob captained the combined Manawatu-Horowhenua (“Manawhenua”) team to a historic Ranfurly Shield victory over Wairarapa in 1927 (an 18–16 win).
Showing true grassroots dedication, he was so overjoyed by the victory that he named his newborn son Ran Furly Jacob.
Milestone Celebrations and The Modern Hub
The club has meticulously cataloged its lineage through major published milestones:
• 75th Jubilee (1973): Marked with an 80-page history compiled by W.C. Shilton, detailing the club’s rise through the early 20th century.
• 125th Jubilee (2023): The club celebrated its grand 125th anniversary with the release of a commemorative book highlighting the club’s modern evolution over the last quarter-century.
Today, operating out of Levin under the Horowhenua-Kāpiti Rugby Football Union, the club has expanded its footprint as a comprehensive “Football and Sports Club.” It supports thriving senior premier men’s programs alongside a massive Junior Management Board (JMB) framework that fosters local rugby, multi-sport activities, and tight-knit community engagement across the district.
