Established in 1877, the Leeston Rugby Club (LRFC) is one of the oldest rugby clubs in New Zealand. Located in the rural heart of the Selwyn District in Canterbury, the club has served as a central pillar of its local community for nearly 150 years.
Foundation and Early Years
The club was formed during a foundational boom for the sport in New Zealand. Just a year after Canterbury clubs standardized their rules under the English Rugby Football Union code, Leeston was established alongside neighboring clubs like Southbridge and Rakaia.
In 1906, Leeston became a founding member of the Ellesmere Rugby Sub-Union, alongside Lincoln, Lincoln College, Irwell, Southbridge, Dunsandel, and Milltown. This sub-union subsequently joined the Canterbury Rugby Football Union (CRFU), establishing a structured competition pathway for rural Canterbury talent.
Club Identity & Modern Era
The club’s distinct traditions have persisted through generations of rural rugby:
Colours: The team proudly wears a Red & White jersey paired with black shorts.
The Bridge Match: One of the club’s defining modern narratives is its fierce, long-standing local rivalry with nearby Southbridge, creating one of the most passionate grassroots rugby derbies in the country.
Community Hub: Over the years, the club has expanded beyond rugby to incorporate the Leeston Squash Club and broader community event hosting, transforming its grounds into a multi-sport hub for the Selwyn area.
Today, Leeston operates as a family-focused grassroots club, fielding both senior and junior teams in the Ellesmere sub-union competitions while preparing for its historic 150th Jubilee milestone.
