The Leamington Rugby Club is a foundational pillar of community sports in Cambridge, New Zealand. Boasting well over a century of history, the club has evolved from a rugged, town-versus-town rugby outfit into an inclusive, multi-sport organization representing the Waikato region.
Foundations and Early Origins (1897)
• Formed as Cambridge West (1897): The club was officially established in 1897. Because the township of Leamington was originally referred to as Cambridge West, the club initially competed under that name before adopting the permanent moniker Leamington.
• Founding the Sub-Union (1903): In 1903, representatives from Leamington met with other local clubs at Cambridge’s historic Masonic Hotel to officially form the Cambridge Rugby Sub-Union. This created a structured local competition alongside rival clubs like Hautapu and Maungatautari.
• The Finlay Cup Era: Before the wider Waikato union structure matured, the ultimate prize for local players was making the combined “Cambridge XV” representative team to fight for the coveted Finlay Cup—a prestigious sub-union challenge trophy that brought the entire community out to watch on Saturday afternoons.
Milestones and Modern Growth
• Home Ground: The club operates out of its dedicated facilities at 36 Carlyle Street, Leamington, Cambridge, which serves as a major social and recreational hub for local families.
• Jubilee Book (2022): Having celebrated its Centennial in 1997, the club reached its 125th Jubilee anniversary in 2022. To honor the milestone, the club compiled and published a massive 182-page historical book charting its heritage, memories, and generations of local players.
Transition to a Multi-Sport Hub
Like many progressive grassroots clubs in New Zealand, Leamington recognized the value of diversification. Today, operating formally as the Leamington Rugby Sports Club, it integrates several sports code divisions and community facilities under one roof:
• Rugby: Fields highly competitive Senior Men’s, Under-21 Colts, Under-85kg restriction, and thriving Junior rugby teams within the Waikato Rugby Union.
• Netball & Hockey: Features successful junior and senior netball branches as well as local youth hockey structures.
• Lacrosse & Squash: Uniquely fields a growing men’s Lacrosse team and shares close community ties with the local squash structures.
Through deep family ties and generations of volunteer support, Leamington continues to maintain its status as one of the most stable and vibrant community sports organizations in the Waikato.
