The Kiwi Rugby Club, based in the historic West Coast town of Hokitika, is a legendary name in South Island grassroots rugby. Affiliated with the West Coast Rugby Football Union, Kiwi RFC is a tough, family-driven country club that has evolved into one of the most successful and dominant modern powerhouses in the entire region.
Foundation & Early Years (1910)
Kiwi RFC was officially formed in 1910 in Hokitika.
• The Origins: At the turn of the 20th century, the West Coast was a rugged frontier driven by gold mining, timber milling, and farming. Rugby was the social glue of these tight-knit communities. Kiwi was formed to give local Hokitika men a competitive team to challenge older West Coast entities.
• Absorbing Local Talent: In 1927, neighboring club Kanieri won the West Coast Senior Championship but fell apart the following year when the majority of their roster relocated. Kiwi RFC absorbed a massive portion of these championship-winning players, instantly boosting the club’s profile and structural depth.
• The Home Ground: The club proudly plays out of Cass Square in Hokitika—a deeply historic sporting ground famous in West Coast folklore (and notorious for hosting the infamous, chaotic “Battle of Cass Square” match back in 1898 before Kiwi was even formed).
Modern Era: The 93-Game Winning Streak
While Kiwi spent much of the 20th century fighting in the shadows of dominant Greymouth-based clubs like Blaketown and Marist, the 21st century has belonged almost entirely to the Hokitika men.
After tasting their first major Senior Championship successes in 2000 and 2003, Kiwi RFC embarked on a run of dominance that left an permanent mark on New Zealand grassroots rugby:
• The 8-Year Reign: Between 2016 and 2023, Kiwi RFC achieved a mind-boggling eight consecutive West Coast Senior Club Championship titles.
• The Unbeaten Streak: During this historic golden era, Kiwi put together an unbelievable 93-game unbeaten winning streak in club rugby—a record of dominance rarely ever seen at any level of the sport in New Zealand.
• The End of an Era: Their legendary streak was finally broken during the 2024 season by the newly merged Wests RFC (a combination of local rivals St Mary’s and Excelsior).
Identity & Heart of the Coasters
• The Colors: Kiwi players pull on the traditional Red and White hoops, heavily mirroring the iconic provincial colors of the broader West Coast “Coasters” representative team.
• Feeding the Province: As a premier club, Kiwi has been a massive feeder to the West Coast Heartland Championship team. Dozens of Kiwi players have proudly represented the province in the annual battle for the Rundle Cup (against fierce neighbors Buller) and played pivotal roles in West Coast lifting the Lochore Cup in 2023.
