Kio Kio United Rugby Club was formed in 1952 by the combination of two country clubs, Kio Kio and United. For the previous three years the two clubs had been joining forces in various grades to make up teams to compete in the Otorohanga Sub Union competition.

The Kio Kio Club was formed in 1923 and although some wished their team to be entered into the Waipa competition, the club eventually affiliated through the Otorohanga seniors and played in the Maniapoto competition keeping Kio Kio in the now King Country region and Club scene.
