Club History

Karangahake Rugby Club

Karangahake rugby club was prominent in Thames rugby (Goldfield’s sub-union) in the very early part of the 20th century. For a small club they had 3 international rugby players, including two dual-internationals. George Gillett played for Karangahake and went on to play for the All Blacks from 1905 to 1908, including 38 matches. Gillett then played league and represented the Kiwi’s in 1911. In 1912 he was one of only 4 Kiwi’s to make the Australasian team that toured the UK in 1911-12. Thomas (Scotty) McClymont played for Karangahake and, after transferring to league, played for the Kiwi’s in 1919 and 1924. Alwyn (Douggie) McGregor toured North America with the All Blacks in 1913 and toured Australia with the Kiwi’s in 1919.
