Kaikoura Rugby Club

Club History

The Kaikōura Rugby Club, established in 1888, holds a special place in South Island rugby history as one of the country’s oldest grassroots clubs.

Unlike what its coastal geography might suggest, Kaikōura does not play in the Tasman or Marlborough competitions. Instead, it travels south to compete as a proud member of the North Canterbury Rugby Sub-Union.

Club Highlights

• The Home Ground: The club is traditionally based at the beautiful Takahanga Domain on Killarney Street, right by the Kaikōura coastline.

• The 2016 Earthquake Rebuild: The devastating 7.8-magnitude earthquake that struck Kaikōura in November 2016 heavily impacted the town and destroyed the original clubrooms. Showing true local resilience, the club has since actively progressed plans to completely rebuild a brand-new multi-sport complex at the domain to serve as a hub for the community.

• A True Community Club: Kaikōura feeds players from all over the coastal district, running teams all the way from introductory “Ripper Rugby” and junior grades (JAB) up to Senior Men’s Division 2 competition.

Over its 135+ year history, Kaikōura RFC has remained a tight-knit pillar of the local community, keeping rural rugby alive and kicking despite geographical isolation and environmental adversity.
