The history of the Judea Rugby Club takes us to the heart of grassroots rugby in the Bay of Plenty. Based at Maharaia Winiata Park in Judea, Tauranga, Judea is not only one of the oldest clubs in the region, but it is also a proud bastion of Māori rugby heritage.
Operating under the wider umbrella of the Judea Sports Club, its history spans over a century of local devotion.
1. Flax Roots Foundation (1910)
The Judea Rugby Club was established in 1910, predating the official formation of the Bay of Plenty Rugby Union by one year.
• The Heart of Māori Rugby: Located close to the Huria Marae, the club was deeply tied to the local Ngāi Tamarāwaho hapū (sub-tribe). From its very inception, rugby was a vehicle for community gathering, kinship, and cultural pride.
• The Centennial: In 2010, the club celebrated its massive 100-year Centenary (1910–2010). To ensure its early pioneer years and local legends weren’t lost to time, historians Paul Woller and Justin Heke published a comprehensive 165-page book titled He Tima Mai Rano: Flax Roots Rugby: The Centennial History of the Judea Rugby Club.
2. The Identity and Ground
• The Colors: Judea takes the field wearing distinct Royal Blue jerseys with White stripes
.
• The Home Ground: The club operates out of Maharaia Winiata Park in Judea. Unlike massive multi-field city complexes, “The Park” is a classic, close-knit community ground that has hosted decades of fierce, physical Western Bay of Plenty local sub-union derbies against old rivals like Arataki, Greerton Marist, and Matakana Island.
3. The Modern Breakthrough (2022)
For the vast majority of its modern history, Judea competed strictly in the Western Bay of Plenty local sub-union and the Baywide Promotion/Relegation tiers. However, decades of hard work at the “flax roots” level culminated in a historic milestone in the 2020s:
• Premier Promotion: Following an incredibly strong campaign, Judea earned official promotion to compete in the top-tier Baywide Premier Club Competition for the first time in 2022.
• The Modern Standard: Stepping up to play against powerhouse clubs with vast player pools (like Tauranga Sports and Mount Maunganui) cemented Judea’s status as a sustainable, top-flight club, proving that a family-driven, culturally grounded community side could compete at the highest provincial level.
More Than Rugby
Today, Judea remains a true family club. Mirroring the modern evolution of community sports hubs across New Zealand, the club features a bustling junior rugby academy alongside an incredibly successful netball division, ensuring that multiple generations of Judea families gather at the clubrooms every weekend.
