Hutt Old Boys Marist Rugby Club

Club History

In late 1992, Hutt Old Boys and Hutt Valley Marist made the historic decision to unify Catholic and secular rugby in the lower valley. Debuting in the 1993 season, the modern Hutt Old Boys Marist Rugby Club (HOBM) was born. They moved permanently to the Hutt Recreation Ground, keeping the red and white hoops of the old Hutt club but adding green stripes to honor the Marist heritage.

Modern Era Powerhouse
The amalgamation proved to be an outstanding success. Dubbed “The Eagles,” HOBM reestablished themselves as an elite tier-one club in Wellington.

They claimed the first-round Swindale Shield in 1997, 2012, and 2015, and have captured the premier Jubilee Cup four times in the modern era: 2007, 2014, and 2025. Furthermore, as part of the NZ Marist infrastructure, HOBM frequently dominates the national Marist federation tournament, hoisting the Spillane Cup multiple times.

Modern All Blacks
The modern club has continued its rich tradition of delivering world-class talent to the international stage:
• Piri Weepu (71 Tests, 2011 World Cup Champion)
• Hosea Gear (14 Tests, 2011 World Cup Champion)
• Jeremy Thrush (12 Tests)
