The Heriot Rugby Club is a classic grassroots country rugby club located in the small rural township of Heriot, within the West Otago district of the South Island.
While vastly different in scale from its famous namesake in Edinburgh, Scotland, it holds a deeply valued place in the history of New Zealand’s provincial rugby network.
Foundation and Early Years (1885)
The club was officially formed in 1885, making it one of the older country clubs in the lower South Island. At the time, the surrounding West Otago area was expanding rapidly as a major farming community focused on crops, sheep, and beef. The arrival of the railway line in 1884 cemented Heriot as a vital local hub, which naturally led to the establishment of community pillars like a hotel, a school, and the rugby club.
Affiliation and Local Rivalries
Heriot Rugby Club is affiliated with the Otago Rugby Football Union (ORFU).
Throughout the 20th century, the club competed fiercely in the sub-union country competitions of South Otago and West Otago. Its most intense local derbies were played against neighbouring rural townships like Tapanui, Kelso (before the town was abandoned due to severe flooding in the late 1970s), and Pomahaka.
Major Milestones and Jubilees
Because grassroots clubs are the lifeblood of small-town New Zealand, Heriot’s major anniversaries have been thoroughly documented and celebrated by the community:
• The Centennial (1885–1985): In 1985, local rugby historian A. McMurran published a detailed 104-page centennial book capturing a century of matches, agricultural background, and local family dynasties who wore the club colors.
• The 125th Jubilee (1985–2010): In 2010, the club celebrated 125 years with a follow-up book compiled by Linda Roulston and a local committee, tracking the club’s transition into the modern professional era of rugby.
Modern Status
Like many small, isolated rural clubs across New Zealand facing depopulation or shifting demographics, the traditional standalone Heriot senior team has evolved. Today, much of the competitive senior rugby in the area has seen player pools combine under the umbrella of the West Otago Rugby Club (often drawing players from Heriot, Tapanui, and surrounding farms) to ensure sustainable numbers.
However, the Heriot township retains its tight-knit community spirit, and the legacy of the original 1885 club remains a proud chapter in Otago country rugby history.
