The Hastings Rugby Club (HRFC) holds an esteemed place in New Zealand sports history as one of the literal foundation stones of provincial rugby. From its pioneering 19th-century origins to its eventual role in forming today’s major Hastings sporting hub, the club spanned over a century of local heritage.
Foundation & The First Merger (1884)
• A Founding Pioneer: Founded in 1884, Hastings RFC was one of just four clubs—alongside Napier, Union, and Petane — that met to officially establish the Hawke’s Bay Rugby Football Union (HBRU). This makes the union the oldest provincial rugby body outside of New Zealand’s four main city centers.
• The County Experiment: In its very first season (late 1884), the club pooled its strength with the legendary Joe Warbrick’s Heretaunga Club to form a combined powerhouse called the Hawke’s Bay County RFC. That regional entity competed through the 1890s before eventually dissolving.
Re-Formation and the Golden Years (1918–1990)
• The Modern Era Begins: After the County team wrapped up, the club officially re-formed independently under the standard Hastings Rugby Club banner in 1918, just as World War I was drawing to a close.
• The Jubilees: The club became a massive community anchor in Hastings, celebrating its Silver Jubilee in 1943, its Golden Jubilee in 1968, and eventually its 75th Jubilee in 1993. Over these decades, the club wore its colors with massive pride, feeding top-tier local talent directly into the iconic Hawke’s Bay “Magpies” provincial squads.
Consolidation: Joining Celtic (1990)
By the late 1980s, shifting demographics and financial strains meant that fielding standalone senior teams was becoming increasingly difficult for the older clubs.
In 1990, after roughly 72 years of continuous post-war operation, Hastings RFC made the strategic decision to merge with Hastings Celtic Rugby Football Club (which had been established in 1910).
The Ultimate Amalgamation (1995)
The evolution didn’t stop there. Just five years later, in 1995, the combined Hastings/Celtic entity joined forces with Hastings High School Old Boys (HHSOB).
This massive, ultimate three-way historical union created the Hastings Rugby & Sports Club, which officially kicked off in 1996.
Today, while the original 1884 standalone entity is a memory, its legacy survives directly at the Elwood Road grounds. The modern club honors the foundational HRFC history through its community presence, its junior development, and its standing as one of the premier rugby powerhouses in the Hawke’s Bay club competition.
