The Hamilton Technical & Fraser Technical Old Boys Rugby Club — popularly and commonly known today as Fraser Tech Rugby Football Club (or simply Fraser Tech)—is one of the most successful, historic, and enduring grassroots rugby clubs in the Waikato region of New Zealand.
Here is a breakdown of the club’s proud history, from its academic roots to its powerhouse status in club rugby.
The Origins & Founding (1923)
The club was founded in 1923 by Whampoa Fraser, an iconic figure in Hamilton’s educational and sporting history.
• The Founder: Whampoa Fraser was the headmaster of Hamilton Technical College (which later became Fraser Technical College, and eventually Fraser High School).
• The Vision: Fraser believed strongly in the power of rugby to build character, foster community, and unite young men. He established the club specifically to give the “Old Boys” (former students) of the technical college a place to play competitive rugby after finishing school.
• The Name: Originally encompassing the school’s heritage, the club’s formal name was the Hamilton Technical & Fraser Technical Old Boys Rugby Club, though over the decades it organically shortened in public usage to Fraser Tech.
Growth and Home Grounds
While early days involved shifting between training locations, Fraser Tech eventually secured a permanent home in the heart of Hamilton’s rugby scene.
• The Stronghold: The clubrooms are famously situated at the corner of Mill Street and Norton Road, essentially a two-minute walk right across the road from FMG Stadium Waikato (the spiritual home of Waikato Rugby).
• The Fields: The club plays its home matches at Handy Rentals Park (Mill Street) and Elliott Park.
• The Colors: The club proudly wears the classic Blue and White strips, earning them the long-standing nickname and club chant: “Go You Blue Beauties!”
A Century of Success
Fraser Tech has developed into a heavyweight of the Waikato Club Rugby competition, consistently producing top-tier talent and winning championships across every senior grade.
