Club History

Grammar TEC Rugby Club

Grammar TEC Rugby Club was formed in 2014 with the amalgamation of Grammar Carlton Rugby Club and Teachers Eastern Rugby Club. The history leading to the formation of Grammar TEC saw Grammar Schools Old Boys Rugby Club which was originally formed in 1914 under the name Auckland Grammar School Old Boys Club. In the 1920’s the club agreed to admit former pupils of Mt Albert Grammar which had been founded in 1922, and by 1927 Takapuna Grammar’s Old Boys also gained admittance. It meant a change in the design of the original club badge, which had comprised the single heraldic lion of AGS. The new badge contained three similar lions. And on March 15, 1932, the name of the club was changed to Grammar Old Boys. In 1996 Grammar combined with Carlton Rugby Club to become Grammar Carlton Rugby Club. Carlton Rugby Club had been formed in 1982 when Grafton, established in 1873 amalgamated with Cornwall, established in 1922. In 2014, Grammar Carlton combined with Teachers Eastern to form Grammar TEC (where TEC stands for Teachers Eastern Carlton).

From the Grammar TEC Rugby Club website: In 2011, Grammar Carlton entered into talks with the Teachers Eastern Rugby Club to consider a merger. Teachers Eastern had been struggling for players for its flagship teams for a number of seasons and in 2013 did not field a premier side. Grammar-Carlton had a large and growing player base but had run out of room for expansion at its Cornwall Park headquarters. Steering Committees were established for both clubs over the 2013 year with some ‘nuts and bolts’ of the merger discussed and agreed to in principle. Both Teachers Eastern and Grammar Carlton brought important factors to the table, and it was agreed that a ‘marriage of equality’ would be entered in to. The summary amalgamation booklet was produced. To view a pdf of the booklet click here.
