GPS Rugby Club was originally founded by past students of Brisbane Grammar.
A club was formed in 1887 for past and present students of Brisbane Grammar School, which is considered the origin of what would become the GPS Rugby Club. The “Past Grammar” club was formed as a separate entity from the school, composed of past students. Past Grammar enjoyed early premierships, winning in 1892, 1898, 1899, and 1914.
During the 1920’s when rugby union was disbanded, the Past Grammar club moved to rugby league. However, in 1928, a group of players from the old Past Grammar club reformed to create the “BGS Old Boys” club to play in the newly reinstated rugby union competition. In 1931, the club expanded its membership beyond just Brisbane Grammar School alumni and was renamed “GPS Old Boys.” This marks a key point in the evolution from a school-based club to a broader one.
The GPS Old Boys club, now known as GPS Rugby Club, is one of the oldest rugby clubs in Queensland. The club has had several homes over the years, including New Farm Park and Finsbury Park, before moving to the Ashgrove Sports Ground in 1977. The club has a rich history of producing top-tier players, including more than 50 Wallabies, such as John Eales, Daniel Herbert, and Ben Tune.
