Club History

Gordon Rugby Club

The Gordon Rugby Club, often referred to as The Highlanders, has a rich history that began on Sydney’s North Shore. The original Gordon Rugby Football Club was founded in 1927 but was disbanded in 1930. Many of the original players joined the newly formed Roseville Junior Rugby Union Football Club which won the Metropolitan Junior Club Championship and the Kentwell Cup in 1935. Following this success, the club was admitted to the Grade Competition in 1936 and changed its name to the Gordon District Rugby Union Football Club. In 1949, the club adopted a new jersey featuring the colors of the Gordon tartan and the club song “A Gordon For Me,” highlighting a strong Scottish influence. The name “Highlanders” is a nod to this heritage, referencing the Gordon Highlanders, a British Army regiment. Gordon Rugby Club has had a successful history, particularly in the Shute Shield competition. The club has won nine first-grade premierships: 1949, 1952, 1956, 1958, 1976, 1993, 1995, 1998, and 2020.
