The Geraldine Rugby Club, affectionately tied to the call “Up Reds!”, is one of the oldest grassroots rugby clubs in New Zealand. Based in the scenic town of Geraldine within the South Canterbury rugby region, it boasts a deeply rooted community history spanning nearly 150 years.
The Beginnings (1878)
The club’s history dates back to 1878, a period when rugby was just starting to sweep across the nation.
• In 1888, when the South Canterbury Rugby Football Union was officially carved out of the larger Canterbury union, Geraldine was named one of the founding member clubs alongside neighboring town teams like Temuka, Waimate, Winchester, and Fairlie Creek.
• Shortly after that initial provincial union meeting, the Geraldine and Winchester clubs briefly combined forces to compete under the banner of the Waihi Club.
Milestones & Anniversaries
While the very first iterations of rugby in the town began in 1878, historical markers and major celebrations have followed a couple of structural timelines:
• “Up Reds!” (1878–1973): In 1975, local author Eulla Williamson published Up Reds! — The Story of Rugby Football in Geraldine 1878–1973, archiving the early decades of local match results, community funding, and the evolution of the club’s traditional scarlet red jerseys.
• The Centenary & 125th (1898–2023): The modern club structure frequently traces its continuous centenary milestones back to a reorganization in 1898. They celebrated their 100-year centenary over Easter in 1998, and most recently marked a major 125th Jubilee anniversary in 2023.
Modern Era & Community Role
Today, the Geraldine Rugby Football Club functions as a vibrant community hub at the heart of the township. Like many historic country clubs in New Zealand, it operates with a strong focus on homegrown talent:
• The Local Philosophy: For more than a decade, the club has intentionally filled its senior squad entirely with local players rooted in the community.
• Junior Development (JAB): The club maintains a very strong Junior Advisory Board (JAB) rugby program, regularly fielding teams for well over 120 local children up to the age of 14, acting as a direct feeder system into Geraldine High School rugby and the senior ranks.
