The Foxton Rugby Club holds a highly distinguished spot in New Zealand’s grassroots sports history.
Founding and Early Years (1880)
Formed in 1880, Foxton is one of the oldest rugby clubs in New Zealand and officially the oldest existing club within the Horowhenua-Kapiti Rugby Football Union (HKRFU).
When it was first established, European settlement in the Horowhenua region was sparse, largely dominated by dense bush and swamp. Because of its early origin, Foxton initially established its rugby connections to the north with the Manawatu region.
Moving to Horowhenua-Kapiti
While the Horowhenua Rugby Union was formed in April 1893, Foxton didn’t immediately align with it permanently.
• 1898–1904: Foxton had its first temporary stint joining the Horowhenua Union.
• 1911: Foxton permanently affiliated with the HKRFU, anchoring itself as a powerhouse for the district.
Championship Legacy
Foxton has a proud record of lifting the Ramsbottom Cup / Senior Championship across multiple eras. Notable championship spans include:
• The War Era: Back-to-back victories in 1940 and 1941, and again as Foxton-Moutoa in 1945.
• The Golden 1961–63 Run: Coinciding with the opening of their grandstand on April 8, 1961, Foxton secured a historic three-peat of senior titles.
• Modern Era & Recent Success: The club built strong championship runs in the late 1980s (1986, 1987 shared, 1988) and has seen a resurgence in recent years, capturing the prestigious Senior Championship in 2019 and most recently in 2024.
The Club Today
Despite coming from a smaller rural town, Foxton punches well above its weight. On a per-population basis, it is the largest club in the union, fields multiple senior and junior teams, and acts as a central community hub by supporting other local sports like netball and bowls under its constitutional umbrella.
