Based in the Tararua District of the lower North Island, the Excelsior Rugby Club (Dannevirke) was a proud staple of country rugby for the better part of a century before becoming part of a major modern multi-sport merger.
Here is the history of the Excelsior club and its lasting legacy in the region.
Foundation & Early Decades (1904)
The Excelsior Rugby Football Club was officially formed in 1904 in Dannevirke. This was a booming era for the town, which had grown rapidly as an industrial and logging hub after Scandinavian settlers cleared the dense Seventy Mile Bush.
Though geographically located within the traditional boundaries of the Hawke’s Bay province, Dannevirke’s local rugby scene was tightly knit and highly independent. Excelsior quickly established itself in the local Dannevirke sub-union competitions, adopting a rugged country style of play. In 1954, the club celebrated its major Golden Jubilee milestone, publishing a 56-page retrospective of its first 50 years anchored in the local community.
The Great Local Rivalries
For decades, local rugby in Dannevirke revolved around a fierce, passionate triangle of local clubs. Excelsior’s entire identity was shaped by its intense neighborhood derbies against two primary rivals:
Dannevirke Old Boys (formed in 1910)
Ruahine Rugby Club (formed in 1914)
Every winter Saturday, matches between these clubs drew massive crowds of local farmers, freezing-works laborers, and families to Dannevirke’s Rugby Park, serving as the dominant social and athletic outlet for the district.
The Amalgamation: Forming Dannevirke Sports
As the late 20th century brought shifting rural demographics, consolidating farming operations, and dwindling numbers of young players across the Tararua District, standalone clubs began to face immense strain.
Recognizing that competing against one another for a shrinking pool of players was unsustainable, the historic rivals chose survival and unity over separation. Excelsior, Ruahine, and Dannevirke Old Boys officially amalgamated to form the unified Dannevirke Sports Club.
The Legacy Today: The Manawatu Union
Today, the original spirit of the Excelsior club lives on through the Dannevirke Sports Club, based at Rugby Park on Gertrude Street.
Switching Unions: While historically tied to Hawke’s Bay, the modern amalgamated club competes under the Manawatu Rugby Union umbrella, regularly fielding competitive Senior Premier 2 and Colts (under-21) developmental sides against Manawatu opposition.
A Hub for Tararua Sport: The club has evolved into a massively successful multi-sport organization. Beyond rugby, the Dannevirke Sports Club provides a central home for local netball, football (soccer), hockey, and cricket teams, ensuring that the community foundation built by clubs like Excelsior in 1904 remains vibrant and active today.
