Based just north of Napier in the coastal settlement of Bay View, the Esk View & Districts Rugby Club (commonly spelled as Eskview RFC) is a foundational pillars of grassroots rugby in the Hawke’s Bay region.
Here is the story of a resilient country club that has kept the rugby spirit alive for nearly a century.
Foundation out of Disaster (1933)
The birth of the Eskview club is directly tied to one of the most defining moments in New Zealand history. Following the catastrophic 1931 Napier Earthquake, the entire Hawke’s Bay region was forced into a massive period of physical and social rebuilding.
As communities began to stabilize, there was a profound desire for social connection and community spirit. In 1933, local players, farmers, and workers from the Esk Valley, Bay View, and surrounding northern districts rallied together to form the Esk View & Districts Rugby Club. The club celebrated its 21st anniversary in 1953, cementing its permanent place in the local sporting landscape.
The Home Base: Petane Domain
For decades, the geographic and spiritual heart of the club has been Petane Domain, located on Onehunga Road in Bay View.
Serving as a wider hub for the northern rural communities (including Eskdale, Whirinaki, Te Pōhue, Tūtira, and Puketapu), Petane Domain eventually became a shared multi-sport space. In late 1975, when local soccer players wanted to form a family-oriented football club, the Eskview Rugby Club and the Domain Board welcomed them. This new club—Eskview United AFC—even adopted the traditional sky-blue colors of the Eskview Rugby Club for their reserve sides as a nod to their hosts.
Competition & The Modern Era
Eskview has traditionally played under the Hawke’s Bay Rugby Union (HBRU) umbrella, wearing its signature sky-blue colors with pride.
The Local Leagues: Rather than chasing the bright lights of the elite Napier/Hastings premier grade, Eskview has long been a heavyweight in the Hawke’s Bay Division 2 (vying for the Neil Thimbleby Memorial Trophy) and the rugged Country Grade competitions (playing for the Arthur Bowman Cup).
The “Unbeatable Culture”: Eskview is widely celebrated across Hawke’s Bay for having a passionate, family-first environment. Their clubrooms regularly host community events, fundraisers, and even unique local fixtures like the Hawke’s Bay Backyard Cricket Championships.
A Thriving Junior Whānau
While senior rural rugby faces constant challenges with player depth, Eskview has ensured its survival by building one of the most successful junior rugby systems in the province. The Eskview Junior Rugby Club acts as a massive community funnel, drawing in hundreds of local children to play at Petane Domain every winter Saturday. Guided by a philosophy of “learning through play and personal growth over winning,” the club’s future remains safely anchored in the next generation of Bay View players
