Steeped in the proud traditions of Central Taranaki, the Eltham Rugby Club was a dominant, foundational powerhouse of grassroots rugby in the Taranaki province for over a century before evolving to meet modern times.

Foundation and Early History (1888)
The Eltham Rugby Football Club was founded in 1888, making it one of the oldest clubs in the region—established just a year before the Taranaki Rugby Football Union (TRFU) itself was officially formed.
Based in the rural dairy-farming town of Eltham, the club quickly adopted its signature colors and built a fierce reputation for producing hard, physical forward packs capable of grinding down any opponent in the province.
The Golden Eras: Dominating Taranaki
While many small-town clubs struggle to capture premier titles, Eltham experienced multiple eras of immense provincial dominance. They routinely swept the McMaster’s Shield (the premier senior championship in Taranaki):
The Mid-Century Dynasty: Eltham was the undisputed king of Taranaki rugby following World War II. They captured back-to-back championships in 1945, 1949, and 1950. They then went on an extraordinary run in the mid-1950s, winning the premier title in 1953, 1954, 1956, and 1958.
The Late-Century Resurgence: After a quieter period, Eltham surged back to the top tier of club rugby, lifting the championship trophy again in 1987, followed by successive titles in 1990 and 1991.
An Elite Production Line of All Blacks
Despite its modest rural footprint, Eltham was a legendary incubator for international rugby talent, producing some of the toughest characters to ever wear the All Blacks jersey:
Frank Glasgow (All Black #119): A versatile forward/utility back who played for Eltham and became a key member of the legendary 1905 Original All Blacks tour to Great Britain.
Roger Urbahn (All Black #607): A tireless flanker who represented Taranaki 72 times and played for the All Blacks between 1959 and 1960.
Brian “Jazz” Muller (All Black #658): Perhaps the most famous personality to emerge from the club. A rugged, quintessential country prop, Muller played 35 matches for the All Blacks between 1967 and 1971. He was a legendary anchor for both Eltham and the great Taranaki Ranfurly Shield-defending sides of the 1963–1965 golden era.
Bryce Robins (All Black #852): A dynamic outside back who starred for the club during their resurgence, earning his All Blacks call-up in 1985.
The Amalgamations: Preserving the Legacy
As rural populations drifted and player numbers dwindled across central Taranaki in the 21st century, Eltham made strategic moves to preserve its heritage through amalgamation.
The Kaponga Partnership: In the late 2000s, Eltham initially combined forces with neighboring club Kaponga to sustain viable senior sides.
The Birth of Stratford Eltham (2016–2017): To secure a premier-tier future, a historic merger took place between the Eltham and Stratford rugby clubs, officially forming the Stratford Eltham Rugby & Sports Club.
The merger has proven highly successful; the combined club now competes dynamically in the Taranaki premier division out of both the Stratford and Eltham domains, capturing the modern Taranaki premier club titles in 2024 and 2025. Today, the proud history of the original Eltham club lives on in the red-and-black hoops worn by the unified club.
