Deep in the heart of “Real Kiwi Country,” the Eketāhuna Rugby Club stands as one of the oldest and most historically significant grassroots clubs in New Zealand.
Here is the history of a club that helped pioneer provincial rugby in the lower North Island.
Foundation and the Birth of a Union (1889–1890)
Eketāhuna’s rugby history stretches right back to the pioneering days of the sport in New Zealand.
The 1889 Genesis: The Eketāhuna Rugby Club was officially founded in 1889, the very same year the railway line finally reached the town from Wellington.
Pioneering a Union: Just one year later, on April 19, 1890, delegates from Eketāhuna traveled to nearby Pahiatua to meet with representatives from the Pahiatua and Woodville clubs. Together, they established the Bush Rugby Union. (It was initially proposed to call it the “Seventy Mile Bush Union,” but when Dannevirke opted to stay with Hawke’s Bay, the shorter “Bush Union” name stuck).
The Heart of the Community: The 1913 Grandstand
If you visit the Eketāhuna Recreation Reserve today, you will see a piece of living New Zealand sporting history: the Eketāhuna Grandstand.
Constructed in 1913, this elegant, simple wooden grandstand has survived more than a century of rugged winters and rural structural shifts. Recognised today as a Category II Historic Place by Heritage New Zealand, it acts as a massive point of pride for the local community—serving as the backdrop for generations of vocal local supporters cheering through the winter mud.
The Amalgamation: Wairarapa-Bush (1971)
For the first 80 years of its existence, Eketāhuna battled under the standalone Bush Union banner. However, changing rural demographics in the mid-20th century forced a massive evolution. In 1971, the Bush Rugby Union officially merged with the neighboring Wairarapa Union to create the Wairarapa-Bush Rugby Football Union.
Ever since, Eketāhuna has competed in the Wairarapa-Bush club competitions, famously sporting their distinct red-and-black colors and preserving the “Bush” identity within the wider union.
Modern History & Hosting the Big Leagues
Despite Eketāhuna being a small rural township, the rugby club punches well above its weight when it comes to national recognition.
The Tui Pre-Season Games: In 2015 and 2016, the Eketāhuna Rugby Club became the epicenter of New Zealand rugby when it was selected to host official, sold-out Super Rugby pre-season matches.
Super Rugby in the Backyard: Backed by the local Tui Brewery, the club transformed its grounds to host the Hurricanes vs. Crusaders in 2015, and the Hurricanes vs. Blues in 2016. Upwards of 4,000 screaming fans packed into the small domain, giving rural kids a priceless opportunity to see All Blacks icons playing right in their own backyard.
Today, Eketāhuna remains a fierce competitor in the Wairarapa-Bush premier competition, relying on the same grit, multi-generational farming families, and intense local pride that birthed the club back in 1889.
