The Early Years & Affiliation
The origins of organized rugby in the area date back to the turn of the 20th century. While the Eastern Southland Rugby Sub-Union saw its first official competition kick off in 1904 with foundational clubs like Wyndham and Waikaia, Edendale affiliated with the Sub-Union in 1905.
By 1908, the entire Sub-Union officially affiliated with the broader Southland Rugby Union. Edendale quickly established a fierce local rivalry with its neighbors, the Wyndham Rugby Club, a rugged derby match that remains a highlight of the local sporting calendar to this day.
The Historic 1970s and the Wallis Shield
One of the most legendary eras in Edendale rugby history occurred during the 1970s. Under the guidance of coach Alex Smith, the senior team put together a powerhouse squad characterized by an incredible sense of local unity—featuring a close-knit group of players who lived and worked in the area, famously including four sets of brothers.
The Wallis Shield Success: Edendale had historic, title-winning runs in 1972 and 1975, lifting the coveted Wallis Shield.
The Clubhouse Legacy: This highly successful era on the field completely revitalized the club financially. The momentum allowed Edendale to rebuild its clubhouses and construct an extended pavilion, creating a physical legacy that the club still uses and takes immense pride in today.

Recent Titles: The club has enjoyed prominent modern success, capturing senior division titles in 2009, 2017 (won despite suffering a red card), and a legendary 2022 grand final. The 2022 final was an epic, 100-minute extra-time thriller where Edendale defeated their ultimate rivals, Wyndham, by just a single point.
Club Milestones: The club continues to breed local loyalty. Long-serving club veterans like second five-eighth Jeremy McLeod and utility player Phillip Brown both surpassed the incredible milestone of playing 200 senior games for the club, while front-rower Ryan Udy achieved his 100th cap, proving that the passion for the blue-and-yellow country jersey is as strong as ever.
