Club History

Dubbo Rugby Club

Established in 1899, the Dubbo Rugby Club (Dubbo Kangaroos Rugby Club) is one of the oldest and most prominent rugby union clubs in inland New South Wales. Playing out of Victoria Park in Dubbo, the club is a cornerstone of the Central West Rugby Union (CWRU) competition.

Key Historical Milestones

• Foundation (1899): Rugby union in Dubbo was formally established in 1899 following local trial games and inter-town fixtures. The early years featured local intra-town series (such as the Ross-Uhr Cup) and early inter-district matches across Central Western NSW.

• Modern Reform & CWRU Era (1963): Following shifts in codes and regional sports reorganizations over the early 20th century, the club reorganized into its modern format in 1963, joining the Central West Rugby Union competition.

• Touring Tradition (1970s): The “Battling Kangaroos” built an international reputation in the 1970s through several overseas tours, including visits to New Zealand (1972), Malaysia and Singapore (1974), and California (1975).

• Centenary & History Book (1999): The club celebrated its 100th anniversary in 1999, commemorated by the release of the official centenary book, The Battling Kangaroos: A Centenary History of the Dubbo Rugby Club 1899–1999, authored by Gerry Collins.

• Expansion into Juniors & Women’s Rugby: The Dubbo Junior Rugby Club was officially formed in 1990. In recent years, the club introduced senior women’s teams alongside its three senior men’s grades and colts setups.
