The College Rifles Rugby Club, based in Remuera, Auckland, has one of the most unique origins in New Zealand sports history — born not just out of a love for rugby, but out of Victorian-era military volunteerism.
Here is the story behind the club:
1. The Military Origins (1897)
In early 1897, Colonel Charles T. Major organized a military volunteer unit called the College Rifles Volunteers. The unit recruited its members exclusively from the “Old Boys” (alumni) of Auckland’s prominent secondary schools.
To represent this unique collective, they adopted a coat of arms featuring a Maltese Cross that uniquely blended symbols from each school:

On July 14, 1897, members of this volunteer corps met and formally decided to establish the College Rifles Rugby Football Club to keep the men fit, disciplined, and connected through sport.
2. Wartime Sacrifice & De-militarization
Because the club was fundamentally tied to a military unit, its members were among the first to enlist when conflict arose.
The Boer War & WWI: 33 members served in the South African (Boer) War. During World War I, large numbers of players shipped out to Gallipoli and the Western Front, including Cyril Bassett, who went on to win the Victoria Cross (VC).
World War II: The club was forced to go into temporary recess in 1941 because virtually the entire senior playing roster had enlisted for overseas service.
The explicit military arm of College Rifles finally wound down and ceased operations in 1952, leaving the entity to focus purely on sports and community life, though it staunchly retained its heritage and name.
3. On-Field Achievements
Affiliated with the Auckland Rugby Football Union, College Rifles established itself as a proud competitor at the top tier of local club rugby.
Auckland Premier Men’s Champions: The club has lifted the Gallaher Shield (Auckland’s premier club trophy) twice in its history—first in 1919 (fueled by returning WWI servicemen) and again in 1964.
The Silver Football: College Rifles has won the prestigious Auckland Rugby Union “Silver Football” three times (most recently in 2017), an award given to the club that amasses the most overall championship points across all junior and senior grades in a season.

5. College Rifles Today
Based at College Rifles Park on Haast Street in Remuera, the club has evolved from a traditional men’s rugby club into a massive, multi-sport community hub. Today, while it still fields strong junior and senior men’s and women’s rugby teams, the clubrooms and facilities also host netball, lacrosse, tennis, badminton, touch rugby, and football 7s.
