Based in the suburb of Cobden in Greymouth, the Cobden Rugby Club is one of the oldest and most historic rugby union clubs on the West Coast of the South Island, holding a proud legacy of rugged, community-driven grassroots rugby.
1. Foundation and West Coast Pioneers (1889)
Established: The club was founded in 1889, making it one of the absolute pioneer clubs of the region.
Foundation Member: One year after its birth, Cobden became a founding member of the West Coast Rugby Football Union when it was established in 1890.
District Pride: Because Cobden was historically a separate borough from Greymouth across the Grey River, the rugby club gave a fierce sense of independent identity and district unity to the local working-class community.
Evolution of the Jersey: The team’s colors shifted multiple times across its long history:
Original: Blue jerseys with white shorts.
Early 1900s: Canary and blue hoops (briefly adding a red sash).
1920s: Black and red hoops.

2. The Golden Era (1930–1960)
While Cobden was always competitive, the club entered a powerhouse era from the 1930s through the 1950s, frequently dominating the West Coast club scene and drawing massive local crowds.
They captured the coveted West Coast Senior Championship (Wallsend-Taylorville Estates Cup) 8 times:

Nimmo Park: Longtime club stalwarts Ben Watkin and Harry Mettrick were the driving forces behind building and developing Nimmo Park, which earned a reputation as the best wet-weather rugby ground in the entire West Coast district.
Civic Leaders: The club’s administration was deeply intertwined with local politics. Notable club president Fred Baillie also served a long tenure as the Mayor of Greymouth.
On-Field Reps: Among its finest players, utility back Alan Lindbom achieved major South Island representative honors during the club’s mid-century prime.
4. The Centennial and Modern Legacy (1989)
The club celebrated its Centennial Jubilee over Labour Weekend in 1989, marking 100 years of continuous rugby on the Coast.
