Club History

Clovelly Eagles Junior Rugby Club

Established in 1962, the Clovelly Eagles Junior Rugby Club is one of the premier village rugby union clubs in Sydney’s eastern suburbs. Operating as a core feeder club within the Randwick Junior Rugby district, the club caters to boys and girls from U6 to U12.

Key Historical Milestones

• Foundation (1961–1962): The idea for the club was formed in 1961 at a meeting chaired by Wally Meager (then President of Randwick Rugby Club) alongside founding stalwarts Bill Marchant and Tony Blomberg. In 1962, Clovelly fielded its very first Under 10s team.

• Rapid Expansion: By 1963, the club expanded to 5 teams, and reached 11 teams by 1969. Today, the club regularly fields over 20 teams each season.

• Colors & Identity: The original kit featured black and white hoops with a red eagle motif before adopting their iconic royal blue and white colors. The club’s founding motto remains unchanged: “Play to win… Learn to lose”.

• Home Ground: While early training took place at Coogee Oval, the club permanently established its base at Burrows Park, perched on the cliffs overlooking Clovelly.

• Famous Alumni: The Eagles have produced a remarkable number of professional players and Australian Wallabies, including:

o Eddie Jones (former Wallabies, Japan & England head coach)
o Gary Ella
o Chris Whitaker
o Morgan Turinui
o Tom Wright & Ben Donaldson
o Shawn Mackay
