The history of the Celtic Rugby Club Hastings is a story of strong cultural identity, local rivalry, and eventually, a massive amalgamation that shaped modern rugby in Hawke’s Bay.
While Celtic no longer takes the field under its original lone name, its legacy is preserved as a founding pillar of today’s Hastings Rugby & Sports Club.
1. Foundations & Catholic Heritage (1910)
The Celtic Rugby Club in Hastings was formed in 1910. Like many “Celtic” and “Marist” clubs established around New Zealand during this era, it was deeply rooted in the Irish-Catholic community of Hastings.
Its primary local “feeder” school became St John’s College, ensuring a steady stream of passionate, young, local Catholic players into the green-and-white jersey. The club celebrated its Golden Jubilee (50 years) in 1960 and its 75th Jubilee in 1985, publishing comprehensive histories documenting decades of heavy-hitting local fixtures.
2. The Spillane Cup and Regional Prominence
As a club with strong Catholic and Marist ties, Hastings Celtic competed fiercely in the North Island’s prestigious Spillane Cup tournament—a major annual competition for Marist and Celtic clubs.
Celtic won the coveted Spillane Cup for the first time in 1978.
The club proved to be a tough, proud, and highly competitive entity within the Hawke’s Bay club rugby scene, consistently fighting for the province’s premier club trophy, the Maddison Trophy.
3. The 1990s Amalgamation Era
The 1990s brought massive structural shifts to New Zealand rugby with the onset of professionalism. Small, single-identity community clubs found it increasingly difficult to survive financially and maintain player numbers on their own. This sparked a wave of mergers.
1990 — The First Merger: Hastings Celtic first joined forces with the historic Hastings Rugby Football Club (which had been around since 1884).
1995 — The Super-Club Formation: To create a true powerhouse in the city, the newly merged Hastings-Celtic combined once more—this time with Hastings High School Old Boys (HHSOB).
At the end of 1995, this final amalgamation officially created Hastings Rugby & Sports Club, which began play in the 1996 season.
4. The Modern Legacy
When Hastings Rugby & Sports Club was built, care was taken to weave the DNA of its founding clubs into its new identity:
The Logo & Identity: The modern club logo features imagery representing the four main secondary schools in Hastings, maintaining Celtic’s historic ties to St John’s College.
Netball: The club’s affiliated netball wing—the largest netball club in Hastings—still proudly carries the name Celtic Netball Club.
On-field Triumphs: The merged club immediately captured the spirit of old Celtic, winning the Spillane Cup again in 1999 and 2005, and capturing the Maddison Trophy in 1999.
