The Celtic Rugby Club Ashburton — affectionately known to locals as the “Green Machine” — is one of the oldest and most successful rugby clubs in New Zealand’s Mid Canterbury district.
Foundation and Early Roots (1921)
The club was formally established in 1921 in Ashburton, emerging during a post-WWI boom in community sports. From its inception, the club aligned itself with the traditional Irish-Catholic identity typical of “Celtic” clubs across New Zealand, taking green as its foundational color.
Over its century-long history, the club published major retrospective accounts to preserve its heritage, including a 75th Jubilee booklet in 1996 and a comprehensive Centennial history (1921–2021) written by Steve Devereaux.
The Marist Connection
Ashburton Celtic maintains a proud, formal affiliation with Marist Rugby New Zealand. This relationship provides a pathway for the club’s top young talent, allowing selected Ashburton Celtic players to be nominated and selected for the national New Zealand Marist Colts team each year.
Modern Era & On-Field Success
Based at their grounds on Keenans Road, Celtic has grown into a highly dominant force within the Mid Canterbury Rugby Union senior competitions. The club has experienced an incredibly successful run in recent years:
The Historic 2023 “Double”: The Senior Men’s squad put together a near-flawless season, suffering only a single loss. They made local history by capturing the Luisetti Seeds Country Combined Cup (a cross-provincial competition) and backing it up with Mid Canterbury’s premier trophy, the Watters Cup.
Continued Dominance: The club’s Senior A side has remained at the top of the local food chain, securing the Senior Club Championship title again in 2025.
