Brothers Rugby Club was founded in 1905 in Brisbane, Queensland. It was established by alumni of Christian Brothers schools in the city, primarily St Joseph’s College, Gregory Terrace; St Joseph’s College, Nudgee; and St James’ College. The club’s full name was originally the Christian Brothers Old Boys Football Club. The club had a period of playing rugby league. The rugby union competition was suspended and then disbanded between 1916 and 1928, and a separate Brothers rugby league club was formed. Brothers Old Boys returned to rugby union in 1930.
The club’s famous navy and white “butcher stripe” jersey was not intentional. The club’s Scottish supplier mistakenly sent the irregular striped jerseys for the 1906 season, and the club has worn them ever since, with the exception of a single season during World War II due to rationing.
Brothers quickly became a powerhouse in the Queensland Premier Rugby competition. They won their first premiership in 1907.
Brothers has a reputation as one of Australia’s greatest contributors of rugby talent. The club has produced a remarkable number of representative players, including Wallabies, Wallabies captains, and Queensland Reds players.
