Ballance Rugby Club

Club History

The Ballance Rugby Club was a historic country rugby club located in the Tararua District of the North Island, New Zealand. Centered in the small rural farming settlement of Ballance (just northwest of Pahiatua and near the eastern side of the Manawatū Gorge), the club served as an early 20th-century sporting and social anchor for the local pioneering community.

Foundation and the Bush Sub-Union

The settlement of Ballance was established in 1886 as a government-sponsored farm community named after John Ballance (who later became Premier of New Zealand). As the dense “Seventy Mile Bush” was cleared for dairy and sheep farming, a passion for rugby quickly took root among the local settlers.

The Union: The Ballance Rugby Club competed under the banner of the Bush Rugby Football Union (founded in 1889), which oversaw rugby in the Tararua/Pahiatua hinterlands.

The Neighborhood Rivals: Ballance frequently played intensely competitive local matches against neighboring pioneer settlements, including traditional rivals like Makomako, Mangatainoka, and Mangahao.

The Country Club Era and Recess

Like many rural, community-run clubs of its era, Ballance’s playing numbers were deeply affected by the demographic shifts of the early 20th century.

The World War Impact: The onset of World War I and subsequently World War II took a massive toll on small country clubs across New Zealand, as young men from the local farms left to serve overseas.

Going into Recess: Lacking the numbers to maintain independent senior squads, the Ballance Rugby Club eventually went into recess around the mid-20th century. Local players gradually integrated into larger nearby clubs based in Pahiatua and Woodville.

Legacy and Remembrance

Though the independent club no longer takes the field, its legacy remains preserved in regional archives. A record of the club’s existence, alongside its sister club Makomako, is heavily featured in the local centennial history book Ballance – Between The River & The Range 1890 – 1990.

Today, the rugby lineage of the Ballance district lives on through the modern Wairarapa-Bush Rugby Football Union (formed in 1971 via amalgamation), which still proudly represents the hard-working, grassroots spirit of the old Bush country clubs.
