Club History

Apiti Rugby Club

Apiti Rugby Club was first mentioned in the Feilding Star dated July 17, 1894. Their first game was played in 1895 and the following year the Oroua Rugby Union was formed with teams from Cheltenham, Colyton, Ruahine, Birmingham and Apiti. Apiti’s colours were green and white. In 1957, the Apiti Rugby Club minutes stopped, and the Oroua Rugby Club was started. Sam Strahan was born in Apiti in 1944 and represented Oroua, before becoming a Manawatu representative player and an All Black. The history of the Apiti Rugby Club is recorded in Ivan George’s book “Apiti! Where’s That?”
