Alhambra-Union Rugby Club

The modern Alhambra-Union Rugby Club (AU) represents the formal convergence of two historic North Dunedin entities that joined forces in 1989.By blending the heritage of the Union Cricket and Football Club (established in 1872) and the Alhambra Football Club (established in 1884), AU preserves a lineage that predates the Otago Rugby Football Union itself.

The Ancestral Pillars
1. The Union Club (Est. 1872) The Union club is one of the absolute foundational rocks of New Zealand rugby history. Formed just two years after Charles Monro introduced the sport to the country in Nelson, Union was the pioneer of the game in Dunedin. Initially playing at the North Ground, Union was known for its deep-rooted traditions and its role in forming the Otago Rugby Football Union in 1881. The club provided a massive portion of the region’s earliest provincial representatives
2. The Alhambra Club (Est. 1884) Named after a popular Victorian theatre in Dunedin, Alhambra was born 12 years later. It established its home fortress up the hill at Opoho Park. While Union had a slightly more multi-sport, cricket-aligned origin, Alhambra developed a reputation as a fierce, working-class rugby club. They were famous for their unrelenting, physical forward packs and their iconic maroon and gold jerseys. The club dominated the local competition in the 1890s and produced legendary early figures like Edward “Ned” Hughes, who famously played a test match for the All Blacks in 1921 at the age of 40—making him the oldest debutant in All Black history.

The 1989 Merger: Becoming “AU” By the late 1980s, the landscape of club rugby in inner-city Dunedin was changing. Demographics were shifting, and both North Dunedin neighbors were competing intensely for the same localized pool of players and university students. Rather than letting their legacies diminish, the clubs made the strategic decision to amalgamate in 1989, creating the unified Alhambra-Union. The merger was widely praised for how seamlessly it respected both identities: The Shield & Mascot: They retained Alhambra’s classic maroon and gold colors and kept the spirited Bronco (a rearing stallion) as the club mascot. The Heritage Date: To respect the seniority of the Union side, the new club adopted Union’s 1872 founding date on their crest, cementing AU’s status as one of the oldest active rugby clubs in the Southern Hemisphere. The Grounds: The club consolidated its primary social base at the North Ground clubrooms (on the flat, right on the doorstep of the University of Otago campus) while continuing to utilize the blustery Opoho Park fields for training and match days. Modern Triumphs and the All Black Pipeline The amalgamation breathed dynamic new energy into North Dunedin rugby. The consolidated player depth pushed AU to the absolute peak of the highly competitive Otago Metropolitan Premier competition, culminating in back-to-back premier banners in 2007 and 2008.The modern club has also been an exceptional finishing school for provincial, Super Rugby, and international talent. Era Notable AU Representatives Legacy 1990s Josh Kronfeld The legendary openside flanker played for AU during his rise to All Black stardom, embodying the club’s traditional hard-nosed forward play.2000sBen Smith Affectionately known as “From Accountancy to All Black,” the 84-test fullback and 2015 World Cup winner is AU’s favorite son of the modern professional era.2010sWaisake Naholo The explosive Highlanders and All Blacks winger lit up local club rugby at Opoho and the North Ground during his prime scoring years in Dunedin. Beyond elite men’s rugby, AU has built a massive footprint in the community by fostering a thriving junior club and establishing a powerhouse women’s rugby program that consistently contends for local titles.
