Australian Sub-Union History

This is a very significant umbrella body that governs rugby in all non-metropolitan areas of NSW. It's then divided into numerous zones or "Country Unions" which effectively act like sub-unions. These include:
  • Central Coast Rugby Union
  • Central Northern Rugby Union
  • Central West Rugby Union
  • Far North Coast Rugby Union
  • Illawarra Rugby Union
  • Mid North Coast Rugby Union
  • New England Rugby Union
  • Newcastle and Hunter Rugby Union
  • Southern Inland Rugby Union (this union is also affiliated with ACT Rugby Union
  • Western Plains Rugby Union
This body oversees country rugby in Queensland, with various regional unions under its umbrella:
  • Bundaberg and District Rugby Union
  • Cairns and District Rugby Union
  • Central Highlands Rugby Union
  • Central Queensland Rugby Union
  • Darling Downs Rugby Union
  • Mackay District Rugby Union
  • Mt Isa Rugby Union
  • Gold Coast District Rugby Union
  • Sunshine Coast Rugby Union
  • Townsville and Districts Rugby Union
The ACT Rugby Union (often branded as Brumbies Rugby) also encompasses southern NSW. So, clubs from areas like Southern Inland Rugby Union and Far South Coast Rugby Union in NSW are affiliated with ACT Rugby.
These states generally have a more centralised structure under their respective state While they have metropolitan and often country competitions, they don't typically use the "sub-union" terminology for distinct administrative bodies in the same way NSW and QLD do. However, they may have regional clusters of clubs or associations (e.g., WA Country RU, Central Australian Rugby Union in NT) that serve a similar purpose of managing local competitions.
